| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Ordinary update or unsupported version | For UPDATE REQUIRED, leave the installed system powered with clear sky visibility. Starlink says the download should arrive within 24 hours; apply it through the app when ready or allow the scheduled overnight reboot. Do not repeatedly power-cycle it. UNSUPPORTED SOFTWARE VERSION also uses an over-the-air update. |
| Manual update or very old software | The November 17, 2025 deadline has passed and concerned notified kits, not every Starlink. Starlink says affected terminals older than 2024.05.0 could not sideload; those unable to complete the update are now inoperable. Versions 2024.05.0 through 2024.12.26 can sideload. Later versions needed no action for that notice. Have support interpret ambiguous version numbering. |
Work through these checks
Read before restarting
Copy the exact app alert and read Advanced > Starlink > Software version. An ordinary update, a manual-update prompt and SOFTWARE OUTDATED need different actions. Record the kit privately; do not post your account details or UTID.
What the result means: For UPDATE REQUIRED, leave the installed system powered with clear sky visibility. Starlink says the download should arrive within 24 hours; apply it through the app when ready or allow the scheduled overnight reboot. Do not repeatedly power-cycle it. UNSUPPORTED SOFTWARE VERSION also uses an over-the-air update.
Use only the offered update path
For MANUAL UPDATE REQUIRED, use the current Starlink app on the Wi-Fi network connected to that kit. Follow Start Sideload only when the app offers it. Managed or bypass-mode networks need their administrator to check the official setup instructions; do not disable a company firewall, VPN or isolation rules yourself.
What the result means: The November 17, 2025 deadline has passed and concerned notified kits, not every Starlink. Starlink says affected terminals older than 2024.05.0 could not sideload; those unable to complete the update are now inoperable. Versions 2024.05.0 through 2024.12.26 can sideload. Later versions needed no action for that notice. Have support interpret ambiguous version numbering.
Separate the router notice
The Gen 1 router notice is separate: Starlink says it still functions but future updates are ending. Affected customers were offered a Router Mini. This does not mean every dish needs replacing. Verify any offer in your own account; Router Mini needs its included 15 W supply, not the original router’s Ethernet power.
What the result means: If the ordinary update does not finish after the stated window, provide the recorded details to support instead of buying an unconfirmed replacement.
When to stop and get help
Stop for heat, moisture or damaged power equipment. Do not install unofficial firmware, reset repeatedly or alter a managed network. Persistent SOFTWARE OUTDATED needs Starlink support, not a promised recovery trick.
What to tell support
Privately note alert, terminal software, router model, elapsed update time, any app prompt and whether a 2025 notice identified this kit.
Common questions
Will a factory reset restore an expired terminal?
Do not assume so. Starlink distinguishes sideload-capable terminals from those now inoperable. Ask support to verify the specific kit and options.
