Applies to: DStv Explora 3B recorder; not original Explora, Explora 2/3A or Ultra. South African service/account advice may differ elsewhere.
Match your symptom
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Live channels show E48 | Use DStv satellite-signal steps, not disk troubleshooting. |
| Live TV works, recording fails | Check PVR entitlement, storage and exact recorder error. |
Work through these checks
Confirm the decoder and service
Check the front/rear model number against DStv’s 3B guide, then open one subscribed live channel. Ask DStv whether the account has active PVR service and any required access fee; a purchased box alone does not prove recording entitlement.
What the result means: If the PVR service is inactive, account support is the next step.
Separate signal from recorder trouble
If a live subscribed channel shows E48 or breaks up, use the DStv signal guide and note affected channels and weather. If live TV is stable, review the 3B recording menu for the exact message and available storage; do not change LNB settings to cure a storage error.
What the result means: A stable channel narrows the fault toward PVR service or storage.
Keep the hard drive safe
DStv’s 3B quick guide warns against moving the unit while powered because of the internal hard drive. If a move is necessary, stop any recording, put it in standby, wait at least 30 seconds and disconnect power before lifting it. Do not open the case or replace the drive yourself.
What the result means: Persistent disk messages need DStv service with the exact error.
When to stop and get help
Stop if you smell overheating, find exposed wiring or see water. Use an accredited installer for dish/shared-feed work and DStv service for PVR entitlement or a persistent drive error.
What to tell support
Explora 3B model label, PVR/account status, live-channel result, exact recording error, available storage and any E48 message.
Common questions
Does internet failure stop satellite recording?
Do not assume that. Live satellite reception, PVR account access and recorder storage are separate checks. Internet is used for online features such as expanded Catch Up.
