Work through these checks
Prove the receiver has satellite TV
Open a subscribed live channel and note the result. If it is missing or weak, On Demand troubleshooting alone will not fix reception; use the Shaw signal guide. If the channel works, keep dish and coax untouched while testing internet.
What the result means: Working satellite TV is a useful control for VOD-only failure.
Test the 8XX network path
In receiver Options, open WiFi Setup to confirm the home SSID, or inspect a directly connected Ethernet cable. Shaw’s connection guide describes both methods and a connection verification step. Test a phone or computer on the same home network. If both fail, troubleshoot the broadband provider; if only the receiver fails, reconnect it using Shaw’s steps.
What the result means: Do not buy network accessories until this test identifies the fault.
Check speed and account status
Shaw lists minimum downstream rates of 1.75 Mbps for SD and 5 Mbps for HD VOD and says VOD must not be disabled on the account. If internet works but VOD does not, check the account in My Shaw Direct or ask Shaw support. Record the exact message, model, connection result and speed before contact.
What the result means: Account access is separate from the satellite signal.
When to stop and get help
Stop for roof access, wet electrical equipment or exposed coax. Shaw Direct should handle account/activation and installation faults; the internet provider handles a confirmed broadband outage.
What to tell support
800 or 830 model; working channel; exact VOD error; Wi-Fi/Ethernet test; second-device test; downstream speed; account status.
Common questions
Does working live TV prove On Demand should work?
No. Shaw says On Demand also needs high-speed internet and an enabled account.
