Applies to: UK Sky Q satellite installations. Sky Q Mini, Sky+ and Sky Glass/Stream are different devices; select the exact box in Sky’s official troubleshooting flow. This is not an installer alignment guide.
Match your symptom
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| No receiver menus, only the TV’s warning | Check the selected TV input and HDMI cable. |
| Main Sky Q works, another room fails | Choose the Mini or room-specific support path. |
| Main box loses live channels too | Continue with satellite reception checks below. |
Work through these checks
Separate live reception from playback
Open the Sky menu and try two live channels on the main box. Compare with a recording or an internet app only as an additional observation. A recording that plays does not prove a live satellite feed is present.
What the result means: If the menus are visible, the screen can display the box. If only live channels fail, concentrate on reception rather than the TV panel.
Build a simple room comparison
Write one line per box: main or Mini, channel tested, exact message and time. If the main box works, avoid adjusting the dish because another room is failing. Open Sky’s selector and choose the device actually showing the error.
What the result means: A Mini-only problem belongs on that device’s guided support route. A shared failure requires checking the main installation first.
Check weather and recent changes
Note storms, a recent move or building work. Look from the ground for an obvious obstruction; do not enter roof spaces or access a communal distribution cabinet. Wait for severe weather to pass before judging whether the fault persists.
What the result means: A fault tied to weather may clear without intervention. A failure after building work is important evidence for Sky or the property manager.
Check only the accessible indoor setup
Compare the HDMI and dish-input connections with Sky’s current box-specific instructions. Leave splitters, communal settings and alignment untouched. If Sky’s flow calls for a restart, follow that selected model’s sequence and let startup finish.
What the result means: Recheck the same live channels after one change. If only the TV input was wrong, receiver menus and normal viewing should return together.
Use the appropriate repair route
For an individual dish, send the results to Sky. For a communal installation, tell the landlord or building manager and ask whether other flats are affected. Do not buy an LNB before the type of installation is established.
What the result means: Multiple flats affected is evidence of a shared problem, but the building’s installer must locate it. A single-flat failure can still involve communal wiring.
When to stop and get help
Stop if the next step requires roof access, shared-system changes or dish alignment. If damaged or wet cables are visible, leave them alone and arrange qualified help. Our technician-finding service is U.S.-only; UK customers should use Sky or their building’s installer.
What to tell support
Main box or Mini; exact message; working and failing rooms; live channel examples; whether menus and recordings work; weather; recent changes; individual or communal dish.
Common questions
Does a working app mean the dish is fine?
No. Internet playback and satellite reception are separate observations. Test live satellite channels on the main box.
Should I retune or factory-reset the box?
Do not use either as a first step. Follow Sky’s model-specific flow so a reception problem does not become an additional setup problem.
