Viasat: new router or mesh has no internet

Separate a new home-network fault from a Viasat service fault before changing bridge mode or buying more equipment.

Applies to: U.S. Viasat customers adding a personally owned router or mesh. This is not a dish installation, modem activation or port-forwarding guide.

Only the new network failsCheck uplink and router setup first.
Both networks failUse the Viasat no-connection checklist and account status.

Work through these checks

  1. Identify the actual modem

Read its label, not the Wi-Fi name. Keep Gateway 3 and its separate adapter distinct from earlier all-in-one equipment. Use instructions that explicitly name your model.

What the result means: Different hardware needs different menus.

  2. Compare before changing settings

With cellular data off, test a second device on the new network. If the old modem Wi-Fi remains available, test the same device there. Note the exact point where browsing fails; do not disable a working network just to diagnose it.

What the result means: A successful old-network test narrows the fault to the added network.

  3. Trace the indoor Ethernet path

Follow the router maker’s uplink instructions and inspect the modem-to-router cable and labeled ports. Do not insert a satellite coax connector into Ethernet equipment. Leave dish cabling and the Gateway 3 adapter arrangement intact.

What the result means: Link wiring and satellite reception are separate checks.

  4. Use bridge mode only for the documented setup

For the older Wi-Fi Gateway or Surfbeam 2+, Viasat’s linked instructions use Router Settings, Advanced and Bridge Mode Status. Confirm your model and credentials first; save changes once and allow each reboot to finish. Bridge disables the modem’s Wi-Fi. If the named controls are absent, stop and ask Viasat rather than factory-resetting.

What the result means: Do not transfer these menus to Gateway 3.

  5. Retest close to the router, then farther away

After the router completes setup, compare browsing close to it and in the problem room. Try a supported band; 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther while 5 GHz has shorter reach. Coverage loss in one room is not proof that the satellite modem needs replacement.

What the result means: Record the tested network and location.

When to stop and get help

Stop for damaged power equipment, roof work or an undocumented configuration. If the modem also fails before the added router, contact Viasat with model and status rather than changing random network settings.

What to tell support

Modem and router models; indoor cable path; old/new network comparison; current bridge setting; one-device/all-device result. Keep credentials private.

Common questions

Does mesh increase satellite capacity?

It changes home Wi-Fi coverage, not your service plan or satellite capacity. First identify whether the failure is local coverage or the upstream connection.

Should I reset both devices?

Not as a first step. A reset can erase the settings needed to recover the working network. Record the baseline, then follow the exact equipment instructions.
