DISH ViP 211/211k/211z: external drive not recording

Check drive compatibility, DVR activation and formatting warnings; remove a 211-series drive through its DVR menu.

Applies to: DISH ViP 211, 211k and 211z in the United States. Hopper and Wally have different drive limits and workflows. This is not a recording-recovery or decryption guide.

Work through these checks

  1. Check the actual drive and receiver

Confirm 211, 211k or 211z. DISH specifies a single physical hard drive, USB 2.0-compatible connection and 50 GB–2 TB for these older receivers; flash storage is not compatible. DISH Outdoors also calls for the drive’s own power supply. Inspect reachable USB and power plugs; do not assume a USB stick or a Wally-sized drive is suitable.

What the result means: A drive outside the requirements is not fixed by repeatedly formatting it.

  2. Confirm account activation

DISH lists external-drive DVR activation for non-DVR receivers and a one-time charge. Confirm the current charge and whether service is already active before authorizing another payment. An Attention 499 message in the published setup asks you to contact DISH; it does not prove the hard drive failed.

What the result means: An inactive service and an undetected drive are different problems.

  3. Treat formatting as a deliberate setup decision

Proceed only with a dedicated compatible drive whose data can be erased. DISH’s sequence includes Attention 428, activation/contact at 499 and formatting at 873, followed by signal and guide downloads. Once an intentional format is running, do not unplug to repeat setup. If progress stalls, report the exact message to DISH rather than trying another account or a computer format.

What the result means: A computer backup of ordinary files is not a guarantee that licensed DVR recordings can be recovered.

  4. Remove or move the drive correctly

For 211/211k/211z removal, from live TV press DVR, choose Remove DVR and follow Attention 591/Information 592 before unplugging USB. Do not use the simple-unplug rule documented for some ViP DVR models. DISH permits swaps between like receiver classes on the same account; a different account requires reformatting and loses recordings. Confirm any move with DISH first.

What the result means: If Remove DVR is unavailable, ask support before pulling the cable during a recording or active disk operation.

When to stop and get help

Stop at an unexpected erase request when recordings matter. Contact DISH for activation, account-class or persistent disk errors. Do not open the drive enclosure or receiver; for damaged power supplies or wet wiring use qualified service.

What to tell support

Receiver model; drive model/capacity; own power supply; USB cable; exact Attention/Information message; activation status; whether recordings exist and any account/receiver change.

Common questions

Will a bigger drive or USB flash stick work?

Do not use Hopper or Wally limits for 211-series receivers. DISH lists 50 GB–2 TB and excludes flash memory for this class. Verify the current requirements before buying.
