inReach Explorer+ / SE+: Earthmate will not connect

Check the correct app, one-phone pairing and Extended Tracking sleep before resetting your older inReach.

Applies to: Garmin inReach Explorer+ and SE+ only. Original Explorer/SE, Mini 2 and Messenger have different menus or app support.

Work through these checks

  1. Use the model’s app

Open Earthmate, not a guide for Messenger hardware. Put phone and inReach within 3 m (10 ft), with both on. The manual allows one paired mobile device at a time, so a nearby old phone can complicate a move to a new phone.

What the result means: Correct the app/model mismatch first.

  2. Inspect pairing and tracking mode

Check Settings > Bluetooth > Enabled and Connected. For a new pairing, use Settings > Bluetooth > Pair Device > Pair Device and follow Earthmate. Also inspect Extended Tracking in tracking settings: sleep between points disables Bluetooth, detailed track lines and message checking.

What the result means: If testing without Extended Tracking restores connection, weigh battery life against the features you need; do not diagnose this behavior as a broken radio.

  3. Prove the satellite path separately

With the plan active, go outdoors with clear sky and select Test > Test on the inReach. Wait for its confirmation. For a missing reply, use Check > Check Now; the manual’s normal listen interval is 10 minutes and still needs satellite visibility.

What the result means: A passing device test with failed phone pairing points toward the local Bluetooth/app path, not necessarily the subscription.

  4. For computer sync, preserve data

Use a data-capable USB cable with a dry port. Garmin advises closing other Garmin software if it has claimed the device—for example Garmin Express while inReach Sync is trying to connect. Try another data cable or USB port and Earthmate sync before any factory reset.

What the result means: A charge-only cable can charge without allowing sync. Factory reset erases stored contacts, messages, routes, waypoints and logs.

When to stop and get help

If checks fail before a remote trip, contact Garmin and arrange backup communications. Do not erase the device or open it to repair Bluetooth. Keep SOS for actual emergencies.

What to tell support

Report Explorer+ or SE+, phone/OS, Earthmate version, Bluetooth status, Extended Tracking state, device-test result and cables/software used for sync.

Common questions

Does Bluetooth failure stop all satellite messaging?

Not necessarily. These devices can send messages from their own controls. Test the device separately before blaming the subscription.

Why does it disconnect during tracking?

Extended Tracking sleeps between points to save battery and disables Bluetooth and message checking during sleep. Check that setting first.

Will a factory reset keep my routes?

No. Garmin warns it deletes stored routes and other user data. Save/sync important information before a support-directed reset.
