Applies to: Garmin consumer inReach accounts; professional and grandfathered contracts can differ.
Match your symptom
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Routine messages fail after suspension | Read the exact device and plan in your existing account. A suspended consumer plan does not provide ordinary messaging, tracking or inReach weather. Do not reset the device or buy a replacement to fix that account state. |
| Account still says active | Use the exact-model ordinary message/test guide. A plan label alone does not establish a working satellite connection. |
Work through these checks
Identify compatible hardware
Garmin lists Mini 2, Mini 3, Mini 3 Plus, Messenger, Messenger Plus and GPSMAP 67i among compatible devices. Mini 1, Explorer/SE variants and GPSMAP 66i are not eligible for suspended-plan SOS. Check the full current list for other models.
What the result means: Read the device label, not just the app name.
Verify prerequisites and confirmation
For an eligible device, install current software and pair/connect it in Garmin Messenger. It must previously have had active service. An older suspension may need changing to the new Suspend Plan. Verify the account confirmation before relying on it; never trigger SOS to test eligibility.
What the result means: If the option or confirmation is unclear, ask Garmin before travel.
Check timing and future billing
Read the effective date and charges before confirming any plan change. Suspension starts at the next monthly renewal, not immediately. Garmin describes a maximum 12-month pause; check the current region and account terms, including the return to an Enabled plan, before the end date. Canceling is different from suspending.
What the result means: A paid plan change is your decision; this checklist does not submit one.
When to stop and get help
For an actual emergency, use the official emergency procedure or local emergency services. Resolve uncertain service eligibility with Garmin beforehand; do not cancel or suspend a device during an emergency.

Common questions
Will phone pairing restore routine satellite messages?
No. Bluetooth pairing is a local connection. Confirm a plan that permits the intended satellite feature; cellular or Wi-Fi delivery can hide that difference during a test.
