Thuraya XT-PRO: No Network or Position too old

Distinguish satellite registration, location acquisition and SIM service before resetting or updating an XT-PRO.

Applies to: Thuraya XT-PRO only, within current provider coverage. XT-PRO DUAL and XT-LITE are different models. Worldwide website access does not imply worldwide Thuraya service.

Work through these checks

  1. Separate position from network

Go outdoors with clear line of sight and extend the antenna as shown in the manual. The handset updates location when powered on. Let flashing SAT/location icons settle; successful registration shows the country and signal strength. A location icon alone is not proof a call can complete.

What the result means: If position updates but registration fails, continue to the network/SIM checks.

  2. Refresh SAT registration

For No Network, use Menu > Network > SAT registration as the XT-PRO manual directs, in a clear outdoor position. Check current coverage and any outage with your airtime provider. Do not substitute a GPS fix or the site’s globe for provider service confirmation.

What the result means: Persistent failure with clear sight and supported coverage needs provider diagnosis.

  3. Check SIM service without guessing

For Insert SIM, power off before checking the user-accessible SIM installation in the manual. Look for visible damage and correct placement. A non-Thuraya SIM needs supported satellite roaming enabled by its provider. Ask for the correct PIN/PUK: three wrong PIN entries lock the SIM, and wrong PUK entries can deactivate it.

What the result means: Do not use a factory reset to solve a blocked SIM or account problem.

  4. Confirm service, then consider software

With a Thuraya SIM, the manual’s 11112 test call checks service without using SOS. Confirm current availability with your provider. For software, read Security > S/W version and the official update page; firmware must match the stated IMEI range and language family. Do not install an XT-LITE or DUAL file.

What the result means: If a normal test fails, record the outcome for your airtime provider before changing firmware.

When to stop and get help

Stop if the battery is damaged, swollen, hot or the handset is wet. Do not open radio internals, change SOS recipients as a test or install guessed firmware. Seek provider/Thuraya service for persistent faults.

What to tell support

Report XT-PRO, exact message, SAT/location icon behavior, location, SIM provider, service/credit status, test result and software version. Send IMEI only privately when support needs it.

Common questions

Why do bars show but the icon flashes?

The manual says the handset may still need position information. Wait outdoors for location acquisition; signal bars alone are not a completed call test.

Can any mobile SIM work?

No. A non-Thuraya SIM requires a provider with a supported roaming agreement and enabled service; confirm eligibility and charges directly.

Should I factory-reset first?

No. It deletes contacts/messages and cannot create coverage, credit or a roaming agreement. Preserve data and check the actual fault first.
