Applies to: SPOT X two-way messenger, including Bluetooth variant when its matching manual applies. Do not use SPOT Gen4 one-way instructions for this screen and message queue.
Match your symptom
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| X icon: not sent | Check sky, orientation, GPS and activation before trying a new routine message. |
| Question mark: delivery unconfirmed | Do not call it delivered; check account history and contact the recipient. |
| Check mark, one recipient missing | Check the address, blocking, roaming and carrier restrictions. |
Work through these checks
Read the device status, not just the recipient inbox
SPOT’s messaging help gives three different bubble icons. Check the sent-message screen and MyAccount for the same test. A check mark means SPOT X sent the message; it does not establish that an SMS or email was accepted by the final carrier. A question mark means delivery could not be confirmed. An X means SPOT X did not send it. Keep the exact icon and time in your notes.
What the result means: The next check depends on the icon; do not reset a working transmitter because one inbox is empty.
For X, correct transmission conditions
From safe ground, move away from walls, dense trees or vehicle roofs. Place and orient SPOT X as the matching manual shows, allow GPS acquisition and confirm its service plan is active. SPOT says obstruction, antenna orientation, environment, GPS and location can delay messages. After 20 minutes a failed SMS is marked not sent and will not automatically return to the queue. In a non-emergency situation, make a fresh routine test after conditions improve; do not assume the old failed message will go out later.
What the result means: If a new message still shows X in open sky, ask SPOT support about activation or device health.
For sent messages, follow the recipient route
Verify the address or international phone number and ask the recipient to check spam or message blocking. Compare a permitted test to a second trusted recipient to see whether only one carrier is affected. SPOT says mobile providers may block some messages under anti-fraud rules, or roaming/international-message restrictions may apply. The recipient can ask their carrier whether SPOT messages are blocked. This concerns ordinary messaging; do not treat any consumer text as a guaranteed emergency alert.
What the result means: If only one recipient or carrier fails, pursue delivery with that recipient/provider before replacing SPOT X.
When to stop and get help
Stop routine testing if a person needs urgent help, the device is damaged or wet, or repeated messages fail under clear sky. Use another available emergency channel when needed and contact SPOT support with the observed icon. Do not trigger SOS to test a normal message.
What to tell support
SPOT X Bluetooth or earlier revision, software version, message icon, send time, GPS/sky conditions, account activation, destination type and whether another recipient succeeded.
Common questions
Will a failed SPOT X SMS resend automatically later?
No. SPOT says a message still not sent after about 20 minutes is marked not sent and is not kept for automatic later sending. Make a new routine test after fixing the conditions.
Does a check mark guarantee the recipient got it?
No. It identifies a sent message on SPOT X. Delivery to a specific SMS or email recipient can still be affected by that destination or carrier.
