SPOT Gen4 Check In not received

Separate a failed satellite transmission from email or SMS delivery after pressing Check In.

Applies to: SPOT Gen4 Check In or Custom/Help contact notifications; not a test of SOS delivery.

Work through these checks

  1. Confirm activation and message mode

SPOT says the unit must be activated in its account and powered on before choosing Check In, Custom or Help. Tracking and SOS are different modes: do not expect the same contact email/SMS from them. Check your selected mode before troubleshooting recipients.

What the result means: A missing notification from Tracking alone is expected.

  2. Try a safe open-sky Check In

Place Gen4 where its logo faces an unobstructed sky and send a non-emergency Check In. Buildings, heavy foliage or terrain can block the satellite message even when GPS found a position. The user guide says a red blinking message-sending indicator means the last message was not sent; a green GPS indicator alone is insufficient.

What the result means: No transmission: change to a safer clearer location before assuming a bad recipient.

  3. Check destination and account activity

If a Check In appears in your SPOT account, verify the email address, mobile number and selected mobile provider for each contact. Delivery through external email or SMS networks may be delayed. Ask the recipient to inspect spam filtering or their carrier before repeating transmissions.

What the result means: A received SPOT message with no contact notification points to routing or delivery, not necessarily hardware.

When to stop and get help

If the device cannot send even with open sky, stop relying on it for safety and contact SPOT support. If urgent help is needed, use emergency services or another functioning channel immediately.

What to tell support

Mode used; activation status; GPS and sending indicators; sky conditions; account activity; contact address/number/provider (share privately with SPOT).

Common questions

Does a GPS fix prove my Check In was sent?

No. SPOT’s manual separates GPS from the message-sending indicator. A red blinking sending indicator means the last message was not sent.
