Applies to: DStv A9 on compatible HD decoders/Explora equipment. Uses DStv’s August 2020 v1.5 manual, hosted by distributor Space TV, plus current Ultra guidance. Country, menu and app behaviour can differ. XtraView mode changes need installer advice.
Match your symptom
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| No indicator | Check batteries and contacts before any mode change. |
| Indicator works, decoder does not respond | Record the mode colour and compare the decoder’s accepted mode. |
Work through these checks
Check remote power
Press HOME and look for the STANDBY indicator. If it is absent, fit fresh matching batteries of the compartment’s specified type and polarity. A light is a useful power clue, not proof that the decoder received a command. Stop for leakage, heat or damaged contacts.
What the result means: Do not change the dish or satellite wiring for a remote-control symptom.
Match the existing remote mode
Note the colour: red=1, green=2, orange=3. If you know the decoder’s accepted mode, hold INFO and BACK to cycle the remote to that mode; two blinks confirm each change. Test HOME or channel selection. Do not alter decoder “Ignore” settings or an XtraView setup by guessing. If the accepted mode is unknown, ask the installer/provider.
What the result means: Record the original mode so a mistaken change can be reversed.
Check the audio control path
If channel control works, inspect the decoder audio setting: Fixed output does not respond like Variable output to V+/V−. Confirm whether volume should be controlled on the TV or sound system. Keep the original audio configuration unless you understand the connected system. A TV-only fault uses A9 TV/audio programming, not satellite alignment.
What the result means: Do not change the dish or satellite wiring for a remote-control symptom.
When to stop and get help
Stop if batteries have leaked, the remote is damaged or hot, or pairing still fails after the model-specific procedure. Contact the provider for a compatible replacement. Do not open the receiver or reset its installation to fix a remote.
What to tell support
Record remote and receiver models, battery type, which functions work (channels, volume, power, voice), and the pairing message or light pattern.
Common questions
Why do buttons act differently in Ultra streaming apps?
The A9 manual notes app-specific behaviour on Ultra. Use HOME to return to the main menu and test decoder navigation separately.
