Applies to: GPSMAP 66i September 2026 v11 and GPSMAP 67i February 2025 v6 manuals. Not 66s/st/sr or 67 without i. The 66i current manual documents Messenger activation; older firmware/screens can differ.

Work through these checks
Check the correct device and active account
Read the complete model label, including i. Check that the existing inReach account lists this exact device and an active plan. GPS navigation can work without the messaging subscription. Follow the current model manual’s Garmin Messenger activation flow; for a previously registered or managed unit, ask the owner or administrator rather than starting a second account.
What the result means: A successful phone message over cellular or Wi-Fi does not test Iridium.
Use a safe outdoor location
Keep the device outdoors with a clear sky view and antenna facing upward. Stay away from blocking walls or dense trees without climbing or entering unsafe terrain. Keep the unit powered on while it sends and receives the test; a GNSS location alone is not completion.
What the result means: Do not use the SOS button for this routine test.
Run Communications Test and wait for confirmation
Press MENU twice. Select inReach Utilities → Communications Test → Test. Keep the unit in open sky while it sends and listens. If the test is pending or fails, save the exact status and verify the plan before repeating; do not substitute SOS. After plan/contact changes, open the paired Messenger app and allow syncing; the 67i manual also permits Explore for sync.
What the result means: If the test succeeds but a contact receives nothing, inspect the recipient and delivery route before suspecting hardware.
When to stop and get help
If the official test still has no confirmation in safe open-sky conditions, stop relying on this device until Garmin or your account administrator checks its service. Damaged battery, wet port or persistent power fault needs qualified help.
What to tell support
Record exact model, device software, active-plan status, test time, sky conditions and any failed/pending message. Include whether direct device operation works while the phone app fails. Keep IMEI, account credentials and contact numbers private.
Common questions
Why does the map work while messages fail?
GNSS receives positioning signals; inReach must also transmit and receive through Iridium with an active subscription. A GPS fix is not a communications test.
