Applies to: DIRECTV satellite receivers showing 775. Streaming-only devices and error 771 need different troubleshooting. Some installations have no separate, user-accessible SWiM power inserter.
Match your symptom
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| 775 after moving a receiver | Suspect the new connection point; compare with the previous setup. |
| Several rooms fail together | Check shared power before treating each receiver as faulty. |
| The screen actually says 771 | Use the linked 771 guide for reception checks. |
Work through these checks
Establish what changed
Write down the last time TV worked and any room move, cleaning, power-strip change or cable work since then. If practical and safe, return a moved receiver to its original connections without altering the shared installation.
What the result means: If the original location works, the new outlet or wiring path needs investigation; repeated receiver resets will not establish compatibility.
Identify the power device correctly
Compare your installation with the illustration in DIRECTV’s 775 source below. A separate SWiM power inserter is different from the receiver power supply. Do not unplug unidentified equipment or add an inserter because a photo looks similar.
What the result means: If you cannot positively identify the device, skip its power check and give support photos of the existing setup.
Check reachable indoor connections
Look for a visibly loose connection at the receiver’s SAT-IN port, the wall plate and an identified inserter. Follow DIRECTV’s connection check; use finger pressure, not a wrench. Do not exchange the inserter’s ports or reconnect damaged coax.
What the result means: A picture that returns after one connection is secured narrows the fault to that connection. Retest another channel before declaring it fixed.
Restore the inserter’s power
For an identified SWiM inserter, follow DIRECTV’s restart: disconnect its mains plug until the green indicator fades, then reconnect and allow 30 seconds. If it remains unlit, try a safe, known-working nearby outlet. Leave coax routing unchanged.
What the result means: A steady green light shows power is present; it does not prove the entire dish path is healthy. Note whether 775 clears.
Compare rooms after the check
Check the original channel and a second channel on the affected receiver, then another receiver if available. Record which rooms recovered. A temporary recovery that fails again is useful evidence, not a reason to keep cycling power.
What the result means: If 775 persists with restored power, ask DIRECTV to diagnose the installation. Tell them whether the problem is shared or confined to one branch.
When to stop and get help
Stop for damaged plugs, wet connections, burning smells, inaccessible wiring or a power device you cannot identify. RV installations may need an RV satellite specialist. No roof or dish adjustment is needed for these checks.
What to tell support
Receiver model; exact code; affected rooms; any recent move; inserter identification and light behavior; the connection or power check that changed the symptom. Share account details only through official support.
Common questions
Will a new receiver fix 775?
Not necessarily. The receiver may simply be reporting a failure elsewhere in the power or cable path. Diagnose that path before buying hardware.
Is 775 the same as 771?
No. DIRECTV provides separate support routes. Photograph the code rather than relying on a remembered number.
