Applies to: DISH Tailgater Pro portable antenna. The linked quick reference covers VQ4900/VQ4950; confirm the base label and current receiver compatibility. Tailgater generations are not interchangeable.
Match your symptom
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| No receiver menu on TV | Check TV input and receiver power first. |
| Menu visible, mobile setup absent | Check direct MAIN-to-receiver coax. |
| Scan completes; channels not authorized | Confirm account/receiver activation with DISH. |
Work through these checks
Prove the TV display path
Select the TV input connected to the DISH receiver and request its menu. If no menu appears, check accessible receiver power and HDMI before changing antenna settings. A TV’s own No Signal message often refers to its selected input, not the satellite scan.
What the result means: Visible menus confirm the local display connection is working.
Check the powered coax route
Switch off and unplug the receiver before reseating accessible coax. Follow MAIN to SATELLITE IN with the supplied cable and avoid overtightening. For diagnosis, use a direct ground-level connection rather than an uncertain RV TV splitter route. Reconnect receiver power last.
What the result means: If the screen appears only with the direct cable, investigate the RV cable path rather than replacing the antenna.
Restart the setup flow once
If no update is running, DISH’s current Tailgater support says to disconnect receiver power for 60 seconds with the direct coax path, then reconnect and wait several minutes. The older Pro quick reference has different Wally/ViP instructions; use the current provider flow for your receiver rather than mixing menu sequences.
What the result means: One controlled restart is more useful than repeatedly interrupting acquisition.
Finish scan and authorization
Keep the antenna stable with clear southern sky and follow the actual-location prompts. Moving it during or after scanning requires a new scan. Allow receiver downloads to finish. A new or inactive receiver may still need DISH activation even after acquisition succeeds; compare the exact message with account status.
What the result means: Missing authorization or geographically restricted channels are not automatically an antenna fault.
When to stop and get help
Leave roof mounting, internal antenna work and RV electrical repairs to qualified technicians. If setup still fails with a supported receiver and direct cable, contact DISH/KING with the recorded result.
What to tell support
Report base model number, receiver model, activation status, TV menu visibility, coax route, current location and the exact screen after the controlled restart/scan.
Common questions
Why restart after moving the dish?
The antenna acquired satellites from its previous position. The Pro reference requires a new scan after movement, even if the cable stayed connected.
Can I use Hopper as the portable receiver?
Do not assume it. The Pro reference lists Wally and specific ViP/411 receivers, not Hopper. Confirm the exact receiver and antenna revision with DISH.
Why are local channels missing after travel?
DISH says some local, regional and international channels depend on location and your package. Confirm entitlement/availability before changing hardware.
