Work through these checks

  1. Confirm activation and sync

Garmin says inReach features need an active satellite subscription. Pair the Messenger Plus with the Garmin Messenger app, follow activation prompts and sync. Phone Bluetooth pairing or mobile internet alone does not prove satellite readiness.

What the result means: If activation cannot finish, use Garmin account support before a service test.

  2. Move to safe open sky

Go outdoors where the sky is clear, away from roof overhangs and dense cover. Do not climb or leave a safe route for a test. Garmin says messaging, tracking and SOS require satellite access.

What the result means: A blocked view can delay or prevent the test.

  3. Run Test Service

From the device home page, scroll the main menu to Test Service, press OK and select Begin Test. Wait for the confirmation message. Record the exact screen text if it does not arrive. Do not use SOS as a substitute test.

What the result means: Confirmation indicates the service test completed; otherwise ask Garmin before relying on the communicator.

When to stop and get help

If the test still has no confirmation with active service and open sky, do not assume the communicator is ready for a trip. Contact Garmin. For immediate danger use emergency services or Garmin’s actual SOS procedure.

What to tell support

Messenger Plus model, subscription state, activation and sync status, test message, time and sky view.

Common questions

Is Bluetooth pairing enough?

No. Garmin requires an active satellite plan and recommends the outdoor Service Test before a trip.
