SPOT Trace: Dock Mode and missing movement alerts

A movement alert is not sent for every tracking point. Dock Mode also uses GPS positions to distinguish movement from vibration. Check both settings before diagnosing a failed tracker.

Applies to: SPOT Trace user guide 9150-0139-01 R-5, pages 5–7. Not SPOT X or Gen4.

Work through these checks

  1. Separate vibration from displacement

Dock Mode compares GPS readings. Two identical readings suspend tracking; two readings more than 200 meters apart resume it. Water movement alone need not produce a moving track. Inspect the configured mode and timestamps.

What the result means: A movement alert is not sent for every tracking point. Dock Mode also uses GPS positions to distinguish movement from vibration. Check both settings before diagnosing a failed tracker.

  2. Read the alert rest period

Movement Alerts use 30 minutes of rest by default, or 12 hours when selected. After the required rest, the first movement track triggers the alert to configured email/text recipients. A shorter stop is not a new alert cycle.

What the result means: Use an asset you own or are authorized to manage. Keep locations, recipients and authentication codes private.

  3. Confirm the USB update

Changes to tracking interval, Movement Alerts, Dock Mode and Status require the SPOT Trace Updater through USB. An account change alone is insufficient. Use the official updater and the documented cable procedure; keep the authentication code private.

What the result means: A movement alert is not sent for every tracking point. Dock Mode also uses GPS positions to distinguish movement from vibration. Check both settings before diagnosing a failed tracker.

  4. Verify a received point safely

For an authorized test, orient the logo toward the sky and compare account timestamps with actual movement. A device indicator does not prove delivery. Record mode, rest window and last received point for support without publishing locations.

What the result means: Use an asset you own or are authorized to manage. Keep locations, recipients and authentication codes private.
