Applies to: Original Tailgater depicted in the DISH-hosted User’s Guide with printed PN 193249, manufactured by King Controls. No printed revision date was identified. Match that document and enclosure, not a later Tailgater Pro, 4 or VQ4400/VQ4500 guide. Its United States satellite and receiver context is historical; current receiver compatibility, service and coverage require separate confirmation.
Work through these checks
Identify the receiver screen and signal path
Select the TV input matching the receiver’s existing TV connection and check whether its normal menu or message is visible. The original distinguishes the receiver’s TV output from SATELLITE IN, which receives the antenna’s coax feed and supplies its operating power. Observe the existing receiver power lamp by name; its green light does not prove that the antenna has acquired a satellite. Record a missing TV menu separately from a receiver-generated signal or authorization message. No live cable reseating is needed to record this distinction.
What the result means: A receiver menu visible on the TV establishes a usable display path for reading its message, not reception or entitlement. If that menu is absent, preserve TV-input and receiver-state evidence before blaming the dish.
Read reception and guide stages separately
Read the existing full message. The original groups 015 Complete Signal Loss and 151 No Satellites Found with obstruction, weather or the antenna-to-receiver path; 004 Channel Signal Loss concerns tracking to the required orbital slot after a channel change. 150 All Satellites Not Found can also involve a missing satellite footprint at the location. 023 No Program Guide is a different stage: signal needed for the guide has not been acquired. The original sequence separates satellite scan, Acquiring Signal and guide download. Record the stage and elapsed time from the original attempt without starting another scan, changing state selection or moving the antenna.
What the result means: A guide not yet loaded is not the same observation as no satellites found, and missing one orbital slot is different from a blank TV input. Provide the exact stage, channel pattern and already-known weather or obstruction evidence to the installer; historical satellite listings are not a current coverage guarantee.
Separate authorization, local area and blackout
For 005/013/014 Programming Not Authorized, the original lists subscription or a receiver disconnected from signal for a significant time. Preserve the exact affected channel and prior disconnection history; a signal bar does not resolve authorization. For 120 Outside of Viewing Area, 536 Local Channels Interrupted or missing local channels, the manual ties availability to the receiver’s physical location near the account address. 744 Sporting Event Blackout is a separate account-address-based event restriction. Use existing provider information or private support to clarify these messages without changing account addresses, sending activation commands or rescanning as a substitute for a rights decision.
What the result means: A local-channel or event restriction can persist while the antenna receives other programmes. Give these messages to the current provider rather than buying antenna parts or treating every unavailable channel as complete signal loss. The original manual does not establish today’s package rights or authorization process.
When to stop and get help
Stop for damaged or wet equipment, unsafe placement, heat or a cable exposed to traffic. Do not open the antenna, use tools on coax, move it during an existing scan, or change an account, receiver setup or antenna configuration to interpret a message. Persistent hardware or reception faults need qualified service; rights and location messages need the current provider.
What to tell support
Privately record PN 193249, exact antenna and receiver labels, original time and location region, TV input, whole code and text, current displayed stage, channel pattern, weather and any already-known obstruction. Separate local/blackout messages from signal errors. Keep account address, serials and identifiers out of public screenshots.
