Applies to: The on-device button path here is for inReach Mini 2. The Garmin Explore path applies only to its listed compatible communicators, including Mini 2, Messenger Plus, GPSMAP 66i/67i and Montana 700i/710i/750i/760i. Original Mini and SE/Explorer generations use different app/manual paths. Do not treat ordinary Garmin Connect smartwatch weather as an inReach satellite forecast.
Match your symptom
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Forecast looks old or wrong | Read the saved forecast’s location and age first. A report for a previous waypoint or an expired forecast can display normally while answering the wrong question. On Mini 2 open the Weather glance, press OK for its options and choose Change Location; select your current position or the intended saved waypoint. Set the destination before updating. You do not need to delete all waypoints or tracks to correct the weather location. |
| Only marine forecast fails | Marine Forecast Failed can mean the selected place has no marine data rather than no satellite connection. Garmin limits marine forecasts to ocean locations where available; inland lakes are not supported. You can choose an offshore forecast point on the map without physically going offshore. If the land forecast arrives and only marine data fails, report that difference instead of restarting every communication setting. |
Work through these checks
Match device, app and service
The on-device button path here is for inReach Mini 2.
What the result means: Confirm an active inReach service plan and the correct paired communicator before requesting weather. A suspended ordinary plan does not restore weather by re-pairing or resetting the device. Garmin currently describes a satellite weather request as using one text-message allowance; check your actual plan and overage terms before repeated requests. An Update is another request, not necessarily a free refresh.
Check the forecast destination and date
Read the saved forecast’s location and age first.
What the result means: Changing the forecast point does not move your device or prove local conditions.
Request once and wait
At a safe place with a clear sky view, Mini 2 uses Weather > OK/options > Update; select a forecast type if offered. Keep it powered and allow several minutes for the request and reply. In Garmin Explore, with a supported communicator on and connected, use Devices > Weather under inReach Features > + or Get Forecast, then check Forecast Location before Get Forecast. If Explore redirects you to Garmin Messenger because that app is also paired, follow the Messenger route; the missing Explore section alone is not a failed antenna.
What the result means: Repeated updates can consume allowance or incur overages.
Separate missing data from link failure
Marine Forecast Failed can mean the selected place has no marine data rather than no satellite connection. Garmin limits marine forecasts to ocean locations where available; inland lakes are not supported. You can choose an offshore forecast point on the map without physically going offshore. If the land forecast arrives and only marine data fails, report that difference instead of restarting every communication setting.
What the result means: If ordinary satellite messages also fail, use the model’s messaging/service guide; do not reset to refresh weather.
When to stop and get help
Never press SOS as a weather test, climb for sky view or continue a trip solely because a forecast eventually arrived. Forecasts are predictions, not local observations or a safety clearance. Keep emergency instructions and alternate communications available. Do not share precise travel locations, account secrets or private route screenshots publicly.
What to tell support
Record the model, app used, forecast timestamp, selected type and exact message. Note whether the land forecast or ordinary messages arrive. Share location details only privately with support when needed.
Common questions
Can I get marine forecasts for a lake?
Marine Forecast Failed can mean the selected place has no marine data rather than no satellite connection. Garmin limits marine forecasts to ocean locations where available; inland lakes are not supported. You can choose an offshore forecast point on the map without physically going offshore. If the land forecast arrives and only marine data fails, report that difference instead of restarting every communication setting.
Does app weather prove satellite reception?
No. A paired phone can receive supported requests using Wi-Fi or cellular internet. Check the reported path and device state; a forecast received online is not a satellite-only test, and charges depend on the actual path and current plan.
