Montana 700i/710i/750i/760i satellite messages not sending

Verify the i-model and active plan, sync recent changes and use the official inReach Communications Test outdoors.

Applies to: February 2026 v11 Montana 700-series manual: 700i, 710i, 750i and 760i. Montana 700/710 without i cannot transmit satellite messages on their own. Current activation uses Messenger; older setup pages may differ.

Work through these checks

  1. Confirm the exact i-model and service

Read the hardware label and check the existing account for this device and an active inReach plan. The current manual describes activation through Garmin Messenger. For a used or managed unit, ask the owner to resolve account ownership rather than purchasing another subscription or resetting the unit.

What the result means: A GPS position is not proof of an active messaging subscription.

  2. Read power and message status

Check the display as well as the LED. Flashing red is documented for a failed message and for battery below 10%; it does not identify the radio as faulty. Charge using approved equipment with a dry port. Flashing green can be expedition mode with the screen off, while double flashing green means unread messages.

What the result means: Alternating red/green means SOS mode; do not activate it for troubleshooting.

  3. Run the official test and sync changes

Outside under clear sky, open the main menu using the Home symbol. Select inReach → inReach Utilities → Communications Test → Test. Leave the antenna facing the sky and wait for confirmation. After changing a plan, contacts or check-in recipients, open paired Messenger or Explore and allow syncing. If only replies are missing, the documented manual check is inReach → inReach Utilities → Mail Check → Check Mailbox.

What the result means: If the test succeeds, investigate a recipient or phone-app issue separately.

When to stop and get help

Stop if a safe official test has no confirmation, the battery is damaged or the port is wet. Contact Garmin or the account administrator with the exact model and status before depending on it away from ordinary coverage.

What to tell support

Record the complete Montana model, firmware, active-plan status, LED pattern, screen warning, test time and whether the direct test or only the phone app fails. Do not publish your IMEI or contacts.

Common questions

Can Montana 700 or 710 without i send satellite messages?

They do not have built-in inReach. Compatibility with an external inReach Remote connection is a separate feature and requires a compatible communicator.
