Original inReach Mini: messages, listening and track evidence

Read original-model message and tracking states while keeping Bluetooth, satellite listening and local versus transmitted points distinct.

Applies to: Original Garmin inReach Mini, using the OEM owner’s manual marked October 2026, GUID-FA0F13D2-5453-46E0-ABD5-7EE4D4702413 v9. Not Mini2, Mini3 or Messenger. Match the device and installed interface. This page concerns an already provisioned device and observations of existing ordinary messages; it does not activate a plan, test emergency service or establish country/service eligibility.

Work through these checks

  1. Separate phone and satellite observations

Read the Mini’s current message details from Messages → OK → conversation → message, without sending again. Compare the Mini itself with the optional phone: the manual says Earthmate messages appear on both devices, but Bluetooth status is a local connection observation. Record any difference and the Mini’s data-status icon. Clear sky is required for Iridium transmission; a GPS position or paired phone alone does not establish that path. Do not pair a second phone as a test.

  2. Keep the existing listening mode

The manual says normal listening continues for ten minutes after sending and then every hour, with satellite visibility needed at the listen. Adaptive Mail Check can listen more frequently during that ten-minute reply window, subject to account/configuration. Extended Tracking sleep disables message checking and Bluetooth. Record those existing states and elapsed time instead of forcing Mail Check, changing modes or sending another paid message to make the symptom disappear.

  3. Distinguish a logged point from a sent point

Read Setup → Tracking without editing. Log Interval controls local location logging and the track line in memory; Send Interval controls recording and satellite transmission of moving track points. A detailed local line can therefore differ from the remote report interval. Keep both existing values, movement/time and the remote symptom for support. Do not start tracking, shorten an interval or send a track point merely to test delivery.

When to stop and get help

Do not use SOS, test messages, repeated sends, manual mailbox checks or track-point transmissions as troubleshooting experiments. Do not forget/re-pair a working phone, alter reporting/listening intervals, reset the device or install firmware to collect evidence. An actual emergency belongs to the device’s emergency procedure, not this ordinary-message guide.

What to tell support

Privately keep exact Mini model, installed interface/version if available, phone/Bluetooth status, existing message details and time, sky-view conditions, current Mail Check/Adaptive Mail Check and Extended Tracking states, and Log Interval versus Send Interval. Tell support whether a point exists locally or was expected remotely; preserve the evidence without changing either interval.
