Applies to: Standard Precision MXL012/55/65/75 family, using original MXL012INS Issue 10 in English and German. No separate publication date is identified. Twin observations apply only to an installed Twin variant; the isolated model-code typo in the connection page does not establish another model. Precision I.D, Sky Q variants and Waterways need their own documents.
Work through these checks
Confirm the installed variant and signal path
Match the label and original MXL012INS Issue 10 before interpreting the finder. Record whether the installation is standard single or Twin and whether it feeds a separate receiver or a TV satellite tuner. On a known Twin installation, note the existing output from a safe photograph or installation record: the manual identifies the top output as the finder-connected one. Do not reconnect cables to test that distinction.
What the result means: A Twin receiver path without finder activity can be an output-path finding rather than a failed dish. Unknown variant or output stays unknown until its own records establish it.
Interpret silence and loudness in their own context
Read the existing knob position and LEDs. Fully anticlockwise is the documented ordinary control for silencing the finder, leaving only green; if you normally use that control, preserve the original state first. This does not remove the finder from the signal path. Conversely, a high tone and many LEDs cannot distinguish satellites, so they do not prove that the receiver’s required satellite has been found. No new dish sweep or alignment is needed for this comparison.
What the result means: Green-only silence can be an intentional finder setting. Loudness without a TV picture leaves satellite identity unresolved; it is not enough to condemn the receiver or the dish.
Use receiver evidence to qualify the picture problem
Use the installed receiver’s own normal information view to record its selected satellite, quality and lock, and the original channel/message. Keep the TV’s selected HDMI/SCART input with those observations. The manual’s old Sky digibox example includes Network ID, but its menu sequence and numeric example are not universal rules for modern receivers or Sky Q. Do not change the target, scan channels or copy an old threshold to manufacture a result.
What the result means: Report the separate findings: finder state, installed path, receiver satellite/lock and TV output. If correct satellite identification remains unconfirmed, take those observations to support instead of treating the finder as an identification meter.
When to stop and get help
Stop for an unstable stand, damaged cables or any work requiring electrical connections or dismantling. Do not force a locked dish or use this guide as a new alignment, mounting or receiver-configuration procedure. Keep the existing target and working path; seek qualified help when the observations require physical correction.
What to tell support
Record family/variant, single or Twin and known output used, finder knob position, green/red lights and tone, receiver model and selected target, current quality/lock and original TV message. Photograph only accessible parts; there is no need to unplug a cable, move the dish or create a new failure.
