GPSMAP H1i Plus: missing maps, stalled downloads or storage problems

Check Explore pairing, Wi-Fi, map type, selected region and storage before deleting files or buying another subscription.

Applies to: GPSMAP H1i Plus map preparation using the August 2026 v6 manual. Shared map chapters also cover H1; inReach communication features require H1i Plus. Not a guide to repairing map data in the wilderness.

Work through these checks

  1. Identify the map type and region

Open the apps list > Map Manager. Record whether the issue concerns TopoActive, satellite imagery or a premium Outdoor Maps+ layer, and which area is installed. A road or trail absent from one layer is not proof that GNSS reception failed. Keep the existing map while investigating.

What the result means: Choose a download matching the actual trip area and map purpose.

  2. Check the download connection

Pair with Garmin Explore and connect the handheld to a working wireless network as the manual requires. Messenger activation and an active inReach plan do not replace these map-download requirements. Test normal internet on the network before repeatedly restarting the handheld.

What the result means: This tests the download path, separate from Iridium messaging.

  3. Choose map and storage deliberately

For TopoActive use Map Manager > TopoActive Maps > Add, then choose the required map. For imagery or premium layers, use Map Manager > Outdoor Maps+, select the appropriate option, region and layers. Compare estimated size with available storage; use Storage Location where offered. The card limit is up to 1 TB, not a requirement to use a 1 TB card.

What the result means: If storage is unavailable, preserve files and resolve card compatibility before retrying.

  4. Verify the finished map before departure

Let the chosen download complete, then inspect the actual destination area at useful zoom levels while no longer relying on the download network. Check required detail and your saved route. Use Map Manager > Check for Updates when preparing at home. If it remains missing, record map name, region, storage and error for Garmin; do not erase unrelated files.

What the result means: A checked offline map is preparation, not a guarantee that every trail or hazard is represented.

When to stop and get help

Stop before formatting, guessing a file-system requirement or deleting unknown files. Keep alternative navigation and communications for remote travel. A missing map is not a reason to test SOS or change a working inReach subscription.

What to tell support

Model/software, map type/name, region, selected layers, download estimate, storage location/free space, Explore version and exact error. Keep saved routes private when submitting diagnostics.

Common questions

Is Outdoor Maps+ the same subscription as inReach?

No. Mapping entitlement and satellite communication are separate. Confirm the map layer’s requirement before paying; the manual lists free satellite imagery separately from premium maps.

Does satellite imagery download over Iridium?

The documented map workflow uses a wireless internet network and Explore pairing. “Satellite imagery” describes the image source, not the device’s messaging transport.
