Original DeLorme inReach Explorer

Separate a local phone connection, satellite-message progress and message-listening time before treating a flashing light as a radio failure.

Confirm your model

This is the original DeLorme inReach Explorer, not Explorer+, SE+, Mini or a newer Garmin touchscreen model. The Garmin-hosted historical online manual has no printed revision/date identified. Match its controls and screens to your device. Its DeLorme activation links, app requirements and plan examples are historical, not confirmation of current activation eligibility, prices or phone compatibility.

How it connects

The handheld sends and receives messages through Iridium and can operate without a paired phone. A phone uses the separate local Bluetooth connection and the historical Earthmate app; it does not replace the handheld’s satellite path. Micro-USB is a separate physical port documented for the supplied cable and notified updates.

Lights and messages

  • The status lamp flashes green for a new message waiting and red for an important notice, such as a sending delay. The manual expressly says it is not a satellite-connection indicator. Read the screen before assigning a fault.
  • The Sending animation and the Sent icon describe a message’s progress. A GPS fix describes location, while Bluetooth describes the nearby phone link; neither substitutes for the message’s own status.

A light is one clue, not a complete diagnosis. Match the indicator’s label and the on-screen message.

Before buying parts

  • The original package lists a lanyard, USB cable, AC adaptor and pack clip. Use the clip without covering the upward-facing antenna or holding the device face against the body. Historical Earthmate and desktop-sync instructions do not establish support for a current phone or computer.

These are compatibility notes and official reference links. Confirm the fault and exact part before buying.
